Flour milling facility line conversion

Project overview

McCormick Construction recently completed a complex structural and process conversion for a major U.S. flour milling facility. This fast-tracked project required careful coordination of demolition, equipment installation, millwright services and mill operations—all within a compressed timeline.

Serving primarily as the installation contractor for milling system equipment and design by the owner, McC provided project management, design and engineering of certain structural modifications, demolition of existing equipment, modifications to the mill structures and procurement of specialty subcontractors, steel fabrication, millwright and concrete services including project safety. The work transformed an existing mill line into a fully updated and more efficient production system, all while maintaining rigorous safety protocols and minimizing disruption to ongoing mill activity.

Deliverables

Demolition and removal

• Safely dismantled legacy milling equipment across multiple floors, including purifiers, conveyors, mixers, scales, ductwork and aspiration systems.
• Removed and opened floor sections and structural areas to prepare for new equipment placement and process flow.

Structural modifications

• Provided engineering and design services related to structural modifications to enable installation of owner-provided new milling and equipment line.
• Installation of new steel supports, platforms, stairs and service access structures.
• Reinforced structural areas to accommodate heavier equipment loads.
• Enlarged hoppers and floor openings for improved process integration.
• Start up and commissioning of new milling equipment and systems.

Fabrication and installation

• Fabricated and installed custom platforms, motor stands and hanging assemblies.
• Installed new temper screws, mixers, scales, sifters, aspirators, impact detachers, flow balancers, fans, filters and an infestation destroyer.
• Integrated new spouting, ductwork and aspiration systems to support the redesigned process line including procurement of specialty subcontractor for installation.

Engineering and coordination

• Produced general arrangement drawings and coordinated design changes with engineering partners.
• Managed subcontractors and millwright crews to ensure safe, efficient execution.
• Oversaw all aspects of jobsite safety with OSHA 1926-trained personnel and dedicated site supervision.
• Design-build management for four ground pile storage expansions
